Product Reviews

You will be spoilt for choice when choosing a handheld shower head, so it is important to think carefully about what you are looking for. Our handheld shower head reviews include what we consider to be some of the best models available today, so they should provide you with some inspiration.

1. Yoo.Mee High-Pressure Shower Head

Best Pressure

If you demand high water pressure from your shower, this Yoo.Mee shower head will be ideal. Outfitted with a 2XP Turbo Charger, this shower head will provide a boosted water flow even when it is restricted.

It is also equipped with silicone jet nozzles that discourage limescale buildup. The body of the shower head is durable and heat-resistant, so you won’t have any unpleasant surprises when you pick it up.

You can choose from three spray settings to tailor your time in the shower. The shower head has a shiny chrome finish that will look at home in most bathrooms, but there is also a brushed nickel option for a more subdued look.

What We Like

High Pressure

Low water pressure can ruin even the best showers. It means it will take longer to clean yourself thoroughly and might leave soap and shampoo residue on your body.

This shower head is designed to provide the ideal high-pressure shower experience. It is equipped with a turbocharger that increases the pressure before the water leaves the nozzles, even if your home has reduced water pressure.

Resistant to Limescale

Limescale often forms around shower nozzles, restricting the flow of water as it leaves the shower head. If you live in an area with hard water, you have probably seen limescale on your shower nozzles all too often.

This shower head features silicone rubber jet nozzles that are resistant to limescale buildup and can be rubbed clean with your hand.

The shower head and wall mount are made of engineering-grade ABS plastic that is resistant to heat (1). The hose is made of stainless steel and has brass fittings, so you can be confident that the connections will stay watertight.

Everything is Included

Everything you need to install this Yoo.Mee shower head is included with your purchase. You also receive a water flow regulator that can be installed if the pressure is too high.

What We Don't Like

Loose Wall Mount

The wall mount that holds the shower head is less snug than expected. This means the shower head does not feel completely secure when placed in the mount.

2. AquaBliss TheraSpa 6-Mode Shower Head

Best for Families

The AquaBliss TheraSpa will provide a relaxing spa experience in your own bathroom. AquaBliss has equipped this model with six therapeutic massage settings to soothe your muscles and help your body relax.

The TheraSpa achieves this while also reducing water waste, making your shower more eco-friendly. Its long hose allows it to move around more freely, which is very helpful if you need to sit down while you shower.

AquaBliss has ensured durability as the shower head is made of high-quality material with a chrome finish. The brand even offers a 30-day trial where you can get a full refund if aren’t satisfied with your purchase.

Installing this shower head is very straightforward. Everything you need is included in the package, and step-by-step instructions will walk you through the process.

What We Like

Water-Saving Mode

A significant amount of water is often wasted while showering, particularly when you are waiting for the water to heat up. or letting your shampoo do its work. If you run out of hot water during showers, you are probably using too much.

This shower head has a water-saving mode that can be engaged to pause the flow. AquaBliss claims it can reduce water waste by as much as 90% and should keep your shower hot until the end. This should also save you a few bucks on your water bills!

Six Spray Modes

This versatile shower head offers six therapeutic massage settings that will help you relax and soothe sore muscles.

The six modes are:

  • Gentle rain shower
  • Rain and pulsating massage
  • Pulsating massage
  • Calming mist
  • Rain and mist
  • Water-saving

Suitable for Children and Pets

Many modern showers can be too intensive for young children, as the powerful streams can be painful on sensitive skin. This model’s various settings allow you to tailor the stream to be suitable for your children, whether they prefer soft rain or a light mist.

The same can be said for pets. While some dogs (and a few cats) may enjoy a more powerful jet of water, most will probably prefer a gentler setting. Anything that makes cleaning your pets less stressful is a bonus.

This shower head is made of hard plastic and has a stainless steel hose with brass fittings. AquaBliss claims it will last far longer than shower heads made of nickel.

Easy Installation

No tools will be required to install this shower head. You simply remove the old one from the fixture and attach the new one by screwing it onto the shower faucet.

Plumber’s tape is included to make installation even easier. The package contains easy-to-read instructions to guide you through the process.

What We Don't Like

Low Water Pressure

Some customers complained that the water pressure is too weak. The shower head has a flow rate of 2.5 GPM, which is considered standard for showers. Still, some customers increased the flow rate by removing the restrictor.

Water Flow Rate 2.5 GPM

3. Moen Engage Magnetix Shower Head

Best With Magnetic Base

The Moen Engage Magnetix shower head is a great option if you want a sleek modern handset with a magnetic base. Moen is a leading shower brand that continues to be at the forefront of innovative designs and features.

The shower head has a gleaming chrome finish that will complement the majority of bathroom designs. If you live in a hard water area, you can also choose the spot-resistant brushed nickel finish. This will prevent the appearance of water stains caused by dried mineral deposits.

This shower head has user-friendly features such as a magnetic base and multiple settings. You can buy it with confidence, as the shower head is protected by Moen’s limited lifetime warranty.

What We Like

Magnetic Base

Moen has made it almost effortless to attach the shower head to its base. It uses magnetic docking that holds the shower head securely in place. Even if you accidentally get some soap or shampoo in your eyes, you should still be able to put the handset back where it belongs.

Six Spray Settings

The design of this shower head is inspired by nature and offers smooth switching between water settings to provide your ideal showering experience.

Most shower heads with multiple settings require you to rotate a dial, but this one is adjusted by pressing a large button on the shower head. This makes it easy to change modes without looking at the handset.

Large Head

The large shower head provides a wide spray, covering more of your body without needing to move it. It has a 5.5-inch diameter, making it larger than the average handheld shower head.

What We Don't Like

Shower Head Doesn’t Pivot

Although the magnetic dock is convenient, it also means the shower head can’t pivot or swivel when docked. This makes it difficult to turn the water away from you when required.

4. KES Handheld Shower Head

Best Materials

This sleek modern shower head resembles a microphone more than a traditional shower. However, it is a very efficient handset that provides excellent water pressure.

It is made using durable stainless steel, so you can be confident it will last. The hose is 59 inches long, flexible, and designed with an interlocking spiral.

You can choose from a brushed steel finish or polished steel to complement your bathroom’s overall design. This long, thin shower head will catch the eye of anyone who uses your bathroom.

What We Like

The shower head body is made entirely of high-quality stainless steel. This makes it feel more solid and durable than plastic models.

The extra-long 59-inch hose is also made of stainless steel and has a double interlock spiral exterior to ensure it stays kink-free.

Easy to Install

You will be able to get your new shower head up and running very quickly. Simply remove the old by unscrewing it from the fixtures, and screw this one on in its place. There is no need for tools.

Excellent Water Pressure

Despite its small size, this shower head provides excellent water pressure. Its flow rate is not specified but customer reviews mention being surprised by how much water comes from this relatively small handset.

What We Don't Like

Disappointing Wall Mount

Although the shower head is durable and of high quality, the wall mount is another story. It is made of ABS plastic with a metallic finish to match the shower head. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold the head securely, and it is difficult to install as it needs to be screwed into place.

This means you will need to drill holes in your bathroom wall if there are none already there. Some customers avoided this by gluing it in place instead.

It is easy to switch between the different settings by using the dial on the shower head. You can also use the two heads together or separately.

Easy to Clean

If you live in a hard water area, you have probably encountered limescale more than once. These dried mineral deposits can quickly clog up a shower’s nozzles and significantly reduce water pressure.

Removing limescale or mineral buildup can be difficult, especially from small openings. However, this shower head is equipped with rubber Rub-Clean Jets to make life easier. You can simply wipe away the limescale or mineral buildup with your bare hand or a cloth.

Adjustable Shower Head

The wall-mounted shower head can be moved in any direction you need. This can be important when showering, particularly if you need to leave your shampoo or conditioner on to work for a while.

What We Don't Like

Compromised Water Pressure

This shower head combo’s standout feature is that you can use both heads at once. However, if you do, the handheld shower head usually suffers a major decrease in water pressure. This disappointed customers who bought the product to enjoy a thorough combination shower.

Product Specs

Water Flow Rate 2.5 GPM

Three Water Settings

This shower head offers three water settings. These include a concentrated stream, massage, and a combination of both. It is easy to switch between the settings by simply rotating the shower head.

What We Don't Like

Plastic Construction

The main downside of this shower head is its plastic construction. It looks like a heavy-duty model but it feels quite flimsy compared to metal models.

This is not very surprising, considering its price. It is also popular among RV owners as it is affordable and lightweight.

Excellent Warranty

As always, Delta provides a generous guarantee with its products. This model is protected by the company’s limited lifetime warranty, so you can buy it with confidence.

What We Don't Like

Rigid Hose

Most of the complaints we have seen about this product aren’t with the shower head itself but rather with the hose. Despite having an excellent length of 72 inches, it is quite inflexible, which can make it difficult to maneuver the shower head around your body.

What to Look For (Buying Guide)

A shower head might seem like a relatively simple part of your bathroom but there are some key features that will set them apart from each other. When shopping for a new handheld shower head, consider the following:

Spray Settings

The best handheld shower head models feature multiple spray settings, each providing a different balance of spray width and intensity. These settings often include:

  • Massage
  • Powerful stream
  • Calming mist

Choosing a model with various settings will make your shower head far more versatile. They are particularly useful in a large household, where different people might prefer different types of showers.

Children have sensitive skin and a powerful jet of water might be too harsh for them, so a soft rainfall or mist would be better. Gentler sprays will also help when showering your pets, which can be challenging at the best of times.

Flow Rate

The flow rate measures the amount of water the shower head provides; this is usually written as gallons per minute (GPM). The average flow rate for a shower head is about 2 GPM, which will provide sufficient pressure without wasting water (3).

Most handheld shower heads are between 1.5 to 2.5 GPM, but this will be limited by your home’s water pressure. If the pressure in your home is low, you might need to consider a shower head for low water pressure.

If you want a powerful stream, choose a shower head with 2 GPM or more. Some homeowners try to increase the flow further by removing the water restrictor, but we strongly recommend against this as it can void your warranty.

Hose Length

While the shower head itself is very important, you will also be limited by the hose length. You don’t want to buy a top-rated shower head only to find that it can’t reach some parts of your body due to a short hose. It will also determine how high you can install the wall-mounted docking.

Try to choose a flexible hose. Plastic hoses are usually cheaper but can also be quite stiff, making them more difficult to maneuver around your body.

Unfortunately, the cost of shower heads and their durability are usually closely linked. This isn’t a universal rule, but budget options are generally made of ABS plastic or recycled plastic.

Higher-end models will be more expensive, but they should also be more durable. They are often made of stainless steel or a combination of plastic and steel. Look closely at the product description as some don’t clearly state the material used.

Sooner or later,  you will need to clean your shower head. If you don’t, mineral buildup or limescale could cause reduced water flow. Restricted or completely clogged spray holes are a common issue for people living in hard water areas.

Hard water has high mineral content, and these minerals can be left on the nozzles as water flows through them, creating limescale (4). The best handheld shower heads now have silicone or rubber spray holes that are easily rubbed clean with your hand, so keep these in mind.

If rubbing the nozzles clean with your hand doesn’t work, you can also clean them with vinegar. Vinegar is very effective at penetrating and dissolving stubborn mineral deposits (5).

Vinegar Warning

You should avoid using vinegar if there are hardwood or natural stone surfaces near your shower. The high acidity of vinegar can ruin the finish of these natural materials (6).

Installing a handheld shower head is very easy — you simply remove the old shower head and screw the new one into place. It won’t require any tools but you might need to use plumber’s or Teflon tape, which is often included with new shower heads to ensure a watertight connection.

If you buy a complete shower kit, mounting the docking to the wall is far more complicated. They will usually require holes drilled into the wall, which can be difficult if there are no existing holes.

Smaller fixtures can be attached using a strong, waterproof adhesive. This can be a better option if you don’t want to drill into your tiles or risk damaging your home.

The appearance of a bathroom fixture is often the first thing homeowners consider when shopping. It is important to find the right style and finish if you want your new shower head to complement your bathroom’s overall design.

For example, if your other fixtures have an oil-rubbed bronze finish, a gleaming chrome shower head will look out of place. A modern shower head design, such as a KES model, probably won’t be suitable for a rustic or traditional bathroom. Think about your bathroom as a whole when browsing.

Are Handheld Shower Heads Worth It?

Handheld shower heads are worth it if you want to make the most of your showering experience.

These handheld units can be attached to the wall of your shower using a lengthy rubber hose. They can be removed easily to direct the stream of water precisely in your desired direction.

They help save water without sacrificing pressure. They are ideal for people who are concerned about the environment. The best part is that you don’t need to substantially demolish or refinish to install these units.

How Much Should You Spend on a Handheld Shower Head?

For a handheld shower head, you can spend between $50 and $200.

When you start looking at options that have more functions, are more durable, and have a more fashionable appearance, you’ll notice that many of the more popular ones are more expensive. You could spend a few hundred on a shower system if you want one attractive and packed with features.

What Is a Good PSI for a Handheld Shower Head?

Handheld showers usually have a psi of around 55 or 60. In certain homes, pressure is limited to 40 psi; not even the best handheld shower head could change that.

What Is the Best Handheld Shower Head Brand?

If you feast your eyes on TheraSpa, you’ll see that AquaBliss is currently the best handheld showerhead brand. It’s a functional unit with six different massage and stream output settings.

You can enjoy everything from pulsating flow to mist massage spray. The water-saving mode is perfect for cutting water bills, and the price is affordable.
