Best Kitchen Sink Strainers of 2022

Give your plunger a break.

The kitchen sink is usually faced with the constant threat of being blocked by large food particles. This becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and is an incredibly unhygienic situation.

We’re human, too. We know how easy it is to leave dishes in the sink with food remains on them. Not everyone leaves a clean plate after eating and forcing down food residue into the sink while washing is common.

This, however, can lead to food particles accumulating in the pipes over time, causing problems for your sink. This then leads to a plumbing bill and money out of your pockets. Using a good kitchen strainer can prevent this.

Product Reviews

We sorted through the sink strainers available on the market. After extensive research and reviewing customer feedback, we selected our best kitchen sink strainers.

1. Fengbao 2-Pack Kitchen Sink Strainer

Best Overall Kitchen Sink Strainer

Two heads are better when each head has impressive properties. With holes 0.08 inches small, this product serves as a great strainer. Not a drop of food particles can slip past its guard.

We like this strainer for how easy it is to wash, as well as being durable, corrosion-resistant and rust-proof.

It’s also a breeze to install, which we know will appeal to many of you.

What We Like

Micro Perforations

At 0.08-of-an-inch, the holes are so small that this strainer catches smaller food particles easily. This is an essential part of a kitchen strainer, making this an appealing product for many.

Two in One

This strainer comes in packs of two, which is great in case you have more than one kitchen sink. In addition, you get excellent value for money in case you need to replace one.

What We Don't Like

Might Get Clogged

Food particles easily get stuck in the holes as they cannot pass through freely. This can lead to clogging, although this is preferable over food being in the drainage pipes.

Product Specs

Product Dimensions 4.5 x 1 x 4.5 inches
Item Weight 3.2 ounces
Material Stainless steel
Type Drain strainer
Item Package Quantity 2

2. Helect 3-Pack Kitchen Sink Strainer

Best Kitchen Sink Strainer for Rust

This product is rust and corrosion-proof with little susceptibility to dents or damages. This is all owing to being made of durable stainless steel.

Three in one sounds like a good deal already, but that isn’t all this product has to offer. With each hole at 0.08-inches, this strainer is efficient at keeping food particles out of the drainage pipes.

It has an outer diameter of 4.5 inches, which is the rim, and an inner diameter of 2.95 inches, which is the filter. A depth of 0.95 inches provides ample space for food particles to be collected. All these attributes work together to make this product one of the best out there.

What We Like

Three in One

This product comes in threes, which is great value for money. When the time comes to replace it, you won’t need to go shopping for another strainer.

Also, this particular model could be perfect if you have more than one sink in your home that needs a strainer. This saves you buying three individual strainers, which would likely be more expensive.

Micro Perforations

The holes on this strainer are so small that you’re sure to catch even the smallest particles. This includes sludge, which is something other strainers let through.

Doesn’t Rust

This strainer lasts for a very long time as it’s rust-resistant. This provides excellent for money when compared to strainers that don’t feature this property.

Lifetime Warranty

The manufacturers are confident enough to issue out a lifetime warranty to whoever purchases the product. This makes for excellent peace of mind and provides many users with buying confidence.

What We Don't Like

Not So Perfect Drainage

The small holes in this strainer ensure that you won’t have to worry about smaller particles escaping.

However, it also means that the strainer might have some difficulty draining water. The smaller particles, like those that make up sludge, can keep water from draining quickly.

Product Specs

Product Dimensions 4.5 x 4.5 x 0.9 inches
Item Weight 5.6 ounces
Material Stainless steel
Type Drain strainer
Item Package Quantity 3

3. Kone Garbage G231

Best Depth Kitchen Sink Strainer

This drain assembly consists of a rubber gasket seal and a removable basket strainer. It’s also made with 304 stainless steel construction. It comes with a PVC waterproof pad, rubber gasket ring and locking nut.

The depth of the basket allows for more holes, making it easier to drain water while holding back food particles. This is an extra advantage as the increased surface area means catching more waste. It also reduces the number of times you need to clean it.

What We Like

Ease of Use

When the basket is full, pull it out by its handle, and throw away the dirt. Wash the basket, then replace it. It couldn’t be easier!

Holds More Food Garbage

The depth of the basket is about 3 inches. This makes it able to hold a lot of food particles while simultaneously draining out the water.

What We Don't Like

Not Compatible With All Sinks

The dimensions are 5.24 inches wide and 3.74 inches deep. These are quite large, and not every sink will be able to accommodate this strainer. A little technical know-how is, therefore, required to install it.

Product Specs

Product Dimensions 4 x 4 x 4 inches
Item Weight 9 ounces
Material Stainless steel
Type Flange strainer
Item Package Quantity 1

4. Oxo Good Grips Silicone Sink Strainer

Best Kitchen Sink Strainer for Flexibility

In a product so simple that there isn’t much room for innovation and uniqueness, this particular one has managed to stand out.

This is quite an unconventional strainer. While lined with a stainless steel rim, the main body is made up of silicone, which is more flexible than stainless steel.

The silicone basket is easy to clean. It can be inverted from a deep bowl to a bulging hemisphere by pulling up the center post. We also like that it doesn’t scratch the sink basin.

What We Like

Flexibility and Resilience

Silicone is a flexible material, allowing you to bend the strainer easily. Another good thing about silicone is that it doesn’t rust. It also doesn’t retain stain, meaning that a simple wipe will rid it of any stains it acquires.

Easy to Install

This drain strainer is one of the easiest to install as it sits on top of the drain. Even though sink strainers in general are a simple concept, not all of them are as “plug and play” as this model. This makes it ideal for those who don’t want to fiddle with nuts and bolts.

No Chaffing of the Sink

Since this strainer is made from silicone, it won’t scratch the sink when it’s being installed. This is in contrast to stainless steel models, which some report as leaving unsightly scratches.

What We Don't Like

Holes Are Too Big

While it functions quite well, the holes are too big to prevent smaller particles from going through. This does have a benefit in that it’s easy to clean, so there’s less trapped waste. However, it does detract from the prime function of a strainer.

Cleaning Could Get Messy

Due to the silicone flexibility, when you pull up the center post, the food particles might be sent flying. This can make cleaning up a little stressful and annoying.

Product Specs

Product Dimensions 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 inches
Item Weight 2.4 ounces
Material Stainless steel, silicone
Type Drain strainer
Item Package Quantity 1

5. Everflow 75111 Kitchen Sink Basket Strainer

Best Dual-Purpose Kitchen Strainer

The main feature of this kitchen sink strainer is that it serves as both a strainer and a stopper, depending on your needs at the time. Also, it’s made from high-quality stainless steel with a fixed post that’s chromium-plated. This makes it incredibly durable and resistant to elements of wear and tear.

Users report how aesthetically appealing this product is, adding to the overall beauty of your kitchen.

In terms of maintenance, its covered with silicone underneath, which prevents scratching against the sink basin.

What We Like

Highly Durable

Stainless steel can weather any condition and is quite resistant to wear and tear. Therefore, this product is ideal if you’re looking for a low-maintenance solution.

Dual Purpose

Being a stopper strainer, it can serve as both a stopper and strainer when needed. The stopper blocks the sink to keep water from draining, while the strainer allows water to drain, but holds back particles.

Easily Cleaned

Due to the stainless steel material, dirt doesn’t stick to this stainer. This means that it’s very easy to wipe off stain marks.

What We Don't Like

Sometimes Faulty

Customers report that it doesn’t perform the roles of stopper or strainer very well. This is due to damage to its structure, mostly the central post.

Item Weight 1.28 ounces

What Is a Kitchen Sink Strainer?

A kitchen strainer is a perforated device used to prevent the passage of food particles down the drain. It acts as a sieve, allowing harmless liquid to go down the drain, but catching and trapping food particles.

That way, it keeps dregs, dirt and solid wastes away from your drainage system. It’s remarkably simple and uncomplicated. This saves you from having to spend money on drainage repairs, which is enormous compared to the cost of a sink strainer.

Also, a strainer doesn’t really need maintenance. It doesn’t require much besides emptying and washing it. Installation or removal can be pretty simple, too, although it helps if you’re already keen on DIY.

Types of Kitchen Sink Strainers

Despite being a simple product, not all strainers are the same. The different variations each bring different things to the table, or rather, sink.

  • Stopper Strainer: This is a dual-purpose strainer that can prevent water from flowing and also serve as a filter to let only water flow through. It has a mechanical switch that changes the function accordingly.
  • Drain Strainer: A simple cup-shaped strainer that can be easily placed on the drain to serve as a filter. This is the least complicated of all and requires no installment.
  • Flange Strainer: This type of strainer uses a flange to connect to the bottom of the sink, thereby ensuring water doesn’t leak.
  • Back Nut Strainer: These are placed at the bottom of the sink, joining it to the plumbing system. A rubber seal is used to prevent water leakage, while a back nut is used to hold all the components together.
  • Double Cup Strainer: As the name denotes, it’s made up of two cups. One sits securely in its position in the sink with the help of a nut, while the second one is easily removable and serves as a stopper.

Selecting the Best Kitchen Sink Strainer

There are various factors to consider when selecting a kitchen sink strainer:

Strainers are usually made up of one of the following:

  • Stainless steel.
  • Silicone.
  • Rubber.

Stainless steel offers sturdiness and durability unlike any other. It withstands boiling hot water and freezing water and is also rust-proof.

Silicone is just as resilient as steel, but it comes with the added advantage of flexibility, which steel lacks.

Rubber, however, is a big no. It doesn’t make for the best sink strainers as it can’t withstand hotter temperatures. Silicone rubber is the exception to this. (1).

Drain Size

The overall diameter of the strainer must fit with that of your drain. Too small and the strainer will fall in, too big and the strainer will sit on it. Either way, this renders the strainer ineffective in preventing food particles from going down the drain.

Perforation Size

The smaller the perforation size, the better. If you’re one to cook, you know how easy it is to drop food into the sink when draining. We can’t count how many times we’ve done this!

Take Note

While grains are small, they can still gather in your pipes and cause problems down the line.

A reasonably small perforation size will catch the big food particles and still catch the smaller ones.

Ease of Cleaning

The collected food residues might prove problematic for small, low-quality strainers. The particles might get stuck, and extra work would be required to make it totally clean. Go for strainers that are easy to clean and maintain.

There is no ultimate go-to guide for this, so personal preference comes into play.

Larger perforation sizes mean food particles won’t get stuck, but waste particles will escape being caught. Smaller perforation strainers will catch more food but can leave particles stuck in the holes, meaner a tougher clean for you.

In terms of material, stainless steel strainers are easier to wipe clean due to the smoother finish. However, the look and feel of stainless steel aren’t to everyone’s liking.

Small, But Mighty

A kitchen sink strainer is a small, but vital part of the kitchen and the cheapest way to protect your plumbing. Without a strainer, you could incur avoidable plumbing bills.

The best kitchen sink strainers can prevent the yuckiness of gathered organic material in your pipes. The smell this leaves can be pretty pungent! That’s not to mention the attraction of fruit flies or gnats that it can bring.

Remember that smaller perforations are better for your sink as they’ll catch both big and small food particles.

When choosing a material, stainless steel and silicone are the main choices. They both have upsides and downsides, so the final choice is personal preference. Stainless steel can look better but shows up scratches. Rubber, though, is more scratch-resistant, but some customers feel it doesn’t look as good.
