American Standard Cadet Freestanding Bathtub

Best Quality Tub

The American Standard Cadet Freestanding Tub is an excellent acrylic bathtub. As a freestanding model, it will be a statement piece in any bathroom, as long as you have enough space to accommodate it.

The Cadet tub is sold as a complete kit, including a faucet, sprayer, and drain assembly. This prevents any of the hassle and uncertainty that comes with buying these parts separately.

This is a large, bold bathtub. It is deep, features a wide ledge, and its fiberglass reinforcement ensures it is very durable.

What We Like

2-Piece Design

This bathtub’s two-piece design makes it easy to assemble. This is refreshing, as freestanding baths are often difficult to install due to the extra plumbing and concealment that is required to achieve a sleek look.

Wide Deck

The outer deck surrounding the tub is relatively wide for a freestanding bath. This provides a great opportunity to place candles around the edge for some special relaxation time. It is also suitable for holding up a bath caddy, storing your soap, or even as somewhere to put your drink during a well-deserved soak.

Durable

This American Standard tub has a high gloss acrylic finish and fiberglass reinforcement. The faucet, spray, and drain are made of solid brass, and it is equipped with washerless ceramic disc valves. That means you shouldn’t have to worry about leaks for the lifespan of the bathtub!

This tub is designed to be used for decades so, once your dream bathroom is installed, it should last for a very long time.

What We Don't Like

Faucet Installation

It might be worth hiring a plumber to install the included faucet, as it can be difficult to do yourself. Once it is installed, it’s easy to use but it does take a long time to fill the bathtub. This isn’t necessarily a problem but it does mean you will need to allow a little more time before you can bathe.

User Experience

I've experienced the joys of using this tub for quite some time now and it's a fine balance of modern and traditional aesthetics. The installation process was smooth, though the faucet installation was a bit tricky due to the unusual size of the connections. The tub sits comfortably deep, allowing for a relaxing soak that covers more than just half of your body. Despite some initial flimsiness, once installed, this tub felt just as sturdy as any other acrylic tub I've used before. However, be aware that the tub isn't resistant to all cleaning substances, as my experience with rubbing alcohol led to some damage to the acrylic coating.

Kingston Brass Acrylic Alcove Tub

Best in Capacity

With a 62-gallon capacity, Kingston Brass has created an impressively-sized alcove tub. Its sleek design will complement a wide range of bathroom styles.

This bathtub is 66 inches long, which will be more than enough for most people to enjoy a relaxing bath. It also provides plenty of depth and width, at 32 inches and 20 inches respectively.

The drain is right-handed, and the overall construction of the tub is very durable. It looks high-end but has a budget-friendly price, so it offers excellent value for money.

What We Like

High Capacity and Long

With a 62.17-gallon capacity, most people will be able to comfortably submerge themselves up to the shoulders. This will be refreshing for anyone who usually has to struggle to fit into bathtubs.

Durable Construction

The tile flange design prevents water from seeping between the tub and the wall, which reduces the likelihood of mold and mildew forming (1). This is important because unseen water can cause major problems later.

Fiberglass reinforcement around the entire tub provides extra stability and strength.

Easy Installation

Some customers mentioned that the installation process was straightforward, which is impressive given the size of this bathtub. Experienced DIYers probably won’t need any professional help to install it.

What We Don't Like

Thin Finish

One customer mentioned that this bathtub’s finish was quite thin, increasing the likelihood of scratches and chips. Take care when you clean the tub and don’t use any hard metal tools on it.

Personal Perspective

I've found this tub to be a mixed bag. On the one hand, it's undeniably spacious and the finish is pleasing to the eye. It's been easy to clean and has held up well, even with two young kids frequently using it. However, there are some downsides. This tub can be dangerously slippery without any anti-slip measures, and the design makes it hard for me to sit comfortably without sliding. Installation was also more difficult than expected, requiring a considerable amount of thinset to stabilize the tub. So, while it does have its pros, it definitely has some significant cons as well.

American Standard Evolution Bathtub

Best in Comfort

This is a high-quality alcove-style bathtub from American Standard, featuring molded armrests and a backrest. It has clearly been designed with comfort and relaxation in mind.

It has also been reinforced with fiberglass for improved strength and durability. The pre-leveled base and an under-mount option make installation quick and straightforward, so you won’t need to dedicate much energy to it.

This is one of the largest tubs we have reviewed at 72 inches long. It is also deep at 36 inches, providing plenty of space for long legs and offering total immersion.

If needed, a deep soak max drain is available separately.

What We Like

Ergonomic Design

The molded armrests and back support provide greater comfort while bathing. With a more comfortable bathing experience, you will probably spend far more time relaxing in it.

Size Matters

This bath’s impressive length and depth mean there will be plenty of room for most people to relax in it. There is sufficient space to bathe two children at the same time, or for couples to enjoy some relaxation time together.

Easy Installation

Thanks to the pre-leveled base, under-mount option, and light weight of 115 pounds, installation is relatively straightforward. If you follow the manual carefully, you should soon be able to enjoy your new bath.

What We Don't Like

Check for Cracks

One customer stated that they received this bathtub with a crack in it. Unfortunately, in their case, it was too late to return the tub. To ensure you don’t end up in the same position, be sure to examine your tub carefully before installing it.

Community Feedback

In my experience, this tub is a delightful addition to my bathroom. It's incredibly spacious, allowing me to submerge right up to my neck for a relaxing soak. The lightweight Fiberglass construction simplifies the installation process and the depth and roominess of the tub is a definite plus. I did find the drain plug assembly a bit challenging, requiring quite a bit of effort to function properly, but I'm considering using a rubber stopper to avoid the hassle. Having upgraded my old water heater to a tankless system, I can now enjoy long, warm soaks without worrying about running out of hot water. All in all, this tub has been a great value for the price.

Vanity Art Stand Alone White Acrylic Bathtub

Best in Design

Vanity Art always delivers luxury and this freestanding acrylic bathtub is no different. It is not a budget-friendly option but its unique oval design tops our list in terms of sheer beauty.

This bathtub is made from 100% high-gloss acrylic and reinforced with resin and fiberglass. The surface is stain and scratch-resistant, so it will look pristine for many years.

Its double-walled structure keeps water hotter for longer and strengthens the tub, protecting against cracks. An anti-slip bottom makes it easier to get in and out of the bath safely.

This unit is protected by a one-year limited warranty and certified by UPC. This means the structural integrity and plumbing system have both been assessed and approved by independent monitoring groups.

What We Like

Unique Design

The oval shape of this bathtub stands apart from its competitors. It has a contemporary feel that makes it at home in minimalist modern bathrooms, but it is neutral enough that it should complement most other styles.

Warranty and Certifications

The tub is protected by a one-year limited warranty. It has also been certified by the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), so it has been thoroughly tested to ensure it meets the requirements of a modern bathtub.

High-Quality Materials

Vanity Art has made sure this bathtub will stay pristine throughout years of use thanks to its durable composition that makes it both stain and scratch-resistant. It is easy to wipe clean and its high-gloss finish will gleam for many years.

What We Don't Like

Not Budget-Friendly

While it is durable and beautifully designed, this tub retails at about twice the cost of some other baths on our list. If you aren’t worried about your budget, this probably won’t matter, but you can find better value for money elsewhere on this list.

First-Hand Impression

When I first laid eyes on this Vanity Art Freestanding White Acrylic Bathtub, I was struck by its beauty and versatility fitting into both historic and modern homes. This bathtub, finished on all sides, is made from lightweight, high-gloss acrylic, complete with a center drain, pop-up stopper, and an overflow slot, offering a spacious and enjoyable soak. Compared to our previous cast iron tub, this one isn't as cold and it's light enough for two people to carry upstairs without any issues. My only minor gripe is that the bottom piece isn't flush with my floor, but it's not something others tend to notice, and overall, the quality, finish, and price of this bathtub have left me extremely pleased.

Woodbridge Acrylic Freestanding Bathtub

Best in Looks

This beautiful freestanding minimalist bathtub from Woodbridge is a true bathroom centerpiece. It is not only impressive visually, but it is also wide and deep, making it perfect for a relaxing soak.

It has a 55-gallon capacity and provides enough room for two if you are sitting upright.

The tub has a luxurious look and feel, with sleek lines and a high-gloss finish. The faucet and drain are stainless steel with a brushed nickel coating.

It is easy to clean and maintain due to the finish being scratch and stain-resistant. This is comforting as traditional tubs can often become discolored or damaged over time.

As it is double-walled, water will remain warm for as long as possible. You won’t have to waste water trying to keep your bath hot.

What We Like

Modern and Eye-Catching

The oval shape and sleek curves are complemented by the nickel-coated drain and faucet. The faucet with a shower handset sits high above the tub and has a stylish, slimline design. This is among the most visually impressive acrylic bathtubs we have seen.

Certification and Warranty

This bathtub includes a five-year limited warranty on both the structure and surface, so you will be protected in the unlikely event of manufacturing errors. The plumbing parts have a one-year warranty.

It is certified in both the United States and Canada with UPC and CSA stamps of approval. These ensure that the structural integrity of the tub and plumbing lines has been independently tested and approved.

Quality Drain and Pipe

The high-quality drain and pipe are both anti-odor and anti-leak, constructed to be tough enough to withstand boiling water. They won’t start smelling over time, and they won’t crack when the weather gets cold.

At 37 inches long, the pipe is also adjustable to accommodate different plumbing setups.

What We Don't Like

Requires Extra Securing

This tub weighs just 88 pounds. As it is freestanding, it is even more important to secure it properly to prevent it from being shifted accidentally. You should consider adding some extra reinforcement to keep it in place.

User Experience

When I first laid my eyes on this bathtub, I was thoroughly impressed by the mirror acrylic finish and the well-designed drainage system. This tub was easy to install, fitting effortlessly into my floor drain, and it also holds heat commendably due to its sandwiched insulation. However, my excitement was slightly dampened when I discovered two small cracks at one end of the tub, which while not affecting its function, do mar its aesthetic appeal. Despite this minor setback, I find the tub to be incredibly comfortable and it fits perfectly into my bathroom space, adding a touch of elegance and functionality.

American Standard Studio Acrylic Tub

Best for Lefties

American Standard has long been a household name in bathrooms. It offers various freestanding and alcove units, with this one being an alcove model. This studio-style piece is a straightforward, built-in bathtub that is made to last.

The high-gloss design is minimalist and clean. It is deep enough for comfortable bathing and has a textured floor for extra safety when getting in and out. This will be reassuring if your household has any elderly or young members.

A pre-leveled bottom allows for quicker installation, and the sides are reinforced to prevent any leaks. It has both right-handed and left-handed drain options.

What We Like

Simple Design

The simple, versatile design of this bathtub means it is suitable for a wide range of different bathroom styles. A high-gloss finish contributes to its sleek overall appearance.

Textured Floor

Getting in and out of the bath is something that many people struggle with, and it is made much more difficult if the bath’s surface is too smooth. To prevent slipping, this bathtub has a textured floor, so you can maintain a sure footing when stepping in and out.

Left or Right-Hand Drain Options

Few baths offer both right-handed and left-handed drain options, so it is great to see them here. Depending on your plumbing, your drain will need to be on either the left or right side of the tub. American Standard has designed this tub so it will be suitable for both setups.

What We Don't Like

Only 5 Feet Long

If you are taller than average, you might struggle to get comfortable in this bathtub. It is 60 inches by 30 inches by 18 inches. While it is deep enough, it might be too short for you to recline in.

Personal Perspective

In my recent bathroom remodel, I opted for this tub as a replacement for my outdated 70's cast iron model. This tub offers a wider, deeper, and safer bathing experience. Its anti-slip surface provides safety without compromising comfort, although it is slightly more challenging to clean. One notable feature is the tub's heat retention, better than my previous one, making for a relaxing, deep, soaking bath. However, it's worth mentioning that it takes longer to fill due to its size and might scratch more easily than the old, cast iron types.

Empava Luxury Freestanding Bathtub

Best in Shape

This beautiful freestanding tub from Empava is made in the United States. Its stylish curved design will make it a focal point in your bathroom.

The glossy finish complements the ergonomic shape that provides comfort and relaxation. It has reinforced fiberglass for added durability, and the tub is certified by the UPC. This assures that your piping and drain have been assessed and approved by an independent source, so they are safe for use.

Empava finished the drain and overflow with brushed nickel for an attractive touch. Both are included when you purchase the bathtub.

The water capacity is about 58 gallons, which is more than some others on our list.

What We Like

Streamline Shape

This bathtub is slightly curved at both ends. Empava states that this ergonomic shape provides comfort and relaxation, whichever way you sit. The result is a stunning piece for any bathroom.

Impressive Capacity

The 58-gallon capacity provides a deeper soak than average, so you can submerge more of your body and enjoy a relaxing bath and a more comprehensive clean.

Easy to Clean and Resistant to Chemicals

According to Empava, this bathtub is easy to clean and resistant to many household chemicals and bathing products. This means you will have far more options to clean the tub and can enjoy whatever bath soaps, oils, or bubbles you want.

What We Don't Like

Slow Customer Service

At least one customer had difficulty speaking to customer service post-sale, even though the team was responding before the purchase. Keep this in mind and examine your unit closely as soon as it arrives. Ensure everything is in working order post-installation as well.

Community Feedback

My experience with this tub has been mostly positive, despite some initial issues. The modern design is pleasing to the eye and it holds water effectively with no leaks. Despite this, the tub remains a stylish and comfortable addition to our bathroom, proving to be good value for the price.

How to Choose the Best Acrylic Bathtubs

With so many bathtubs to choose from today, it can be difficult to know how to find the best acrylic bathtub for you. However, you can narrow your search significantly by answering a few key questions about your ideal bathtub:

Size

The first issue to address is the size of tub your bathroom can accommodate. Measure your space but keep in mind that you not only need to fit the bathtub into the room; you also need to be able to move around it. Most acrylic bathtub brands offer various sizes, sometimes with multiple options for the same model.

It is always tempting to choose an extra-large model, but keep in mind that it will require more money to fill, increasing your bills. It is important to find the right balance between luxury and affordability. At the same time, make sure you can fit into your bathtub comfortably.

Durability

Despite being budget-friendly and made from a type of lightweight plastic, acrylic bathtubs are usually very durable. Most are double-walled and reinforced with fiberglass. Layers of insulation reduce heat loss, keeping your bath warmer for longer.

If cared for properly, an acrylic tub should stay in great condition for decades. It requires less maintenance than marble, which is more porous and thus prone to scratching (2).

At the same time, acrylic is porous enough that many standard cleaning solutions should be avoided, as they can soak into the material and permanently stain it.

Finish

Some acrylic tubs have a gleaming high gloss finish, while others have a more muted matte finish. A high gloss finish might be more visually impressive, but you should consider how frequently the tub will be used. If the bath will be used daily by multiple people, it might be best to choose a matte finish, as scratches will be less obvious.

Installation

A lot goes into installing a bathtub. However, as acrylic bathtubs are lightweight, they are among the easiest types to install, especially compared to heavier tubs made from marble or cast iron.

You shouldn’t need to worry about whether or not your floor will be able to hold the weight, as most acrylic tubs weigh less than 130 pounds. Just keep in mind that the floor will also need to carry your weight and the water you bathe in.

Double Check

If you are unsure whether or not your bathroom floor is stable, it is worth calling in a professional builder to check.

Extra Features

Modern bathtubs have numerous extra features that make them stand apart from their competition. These include backrests, mood-lighting, and jets — all of which will help you achieve the spa experience at home.

Determine which additional features you want before you start shopping, or you might be perfectly content with a traditional tub with no extras. These luxury features will not only increase the price of the bathtub, but they will also complicate installation and you might need to hire an electrician.

Cost

Compared to other popular materials, acrylic tubs are usually very budget-friendly. This applies to even top-rated models, making an acrylic bathtub an excellent choice if you want high-end luxury and quality without having to spend the kind of money you would for rarer materials.

Most acrylic tubs stay within the $400 to $700 range, but you might find products above and below this. Setting a clear budget before you start shopping will prevent you from wasting time looking at products that are outside of your price range.

FAQs

Are Acrylic Bathtubs Worth It?

Acrylic tubs are worth it because they are affordable, warm, comfortable, and low maintenance. This kind of bathtub is not only affordable, but it is also light enough to be carried upstairs and installed in a bathroom on the second story.

Because acrylic comes in a much wider variety of shapes and styles than any other bathtub, you can probably find one that complements your taste. However, the lifespan of these tubs is limited, and they are susceptible to being harmed by some types of cleaning supplies.

How Long Will an Acrylic Bathtub Last?

Acrylic tubs can last 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance, maybe even more. Because acrylic tubs are so pliable that they might be scratched, it is essential to use only cleaning products that are not abrasive.

When using a sponge for regular tub cleaning, pouring a bit of dish soap diluted in a pail of water is all required. If you don’t want to use the bucket, add a couple of inches of water to the bathtub.

Baking soda can generate a scrubbing paste safe for acrylic surfaces by simply sprinkling it onto a moist sponge.

Don’t use abrasives (such as steel wool) on the acrylic surface; doing so may cause the acrylic to become scratched. When dealing with obstinate filth, you might find that a brush with soft bristles is handy.

If dish detergent and water are ineffective in removing the gunk, you can try scrubbing the affected area with half of a lemon instead. When it comes to eliminating filth and water marks, a mixture of water and vinegar is equally effective.

Do Acrylic Tubs Turn Yellow?

Some reasons acrylic tubs can turn yellow include using the wrong cleaning or exposure to hard water.

The United States generally has hard water, and residences that get their water from wells have an exceptionally high risk of having hard water. Limescale deposits, which result from minerals in this water, cause acrylic surfaces to be yellow naturally.

Certain bathroom cleaners contain ingredients that are too abrasive for acrylic surfaces. Suppose you want to make sure that you avoid permanent damage to the acrylic lining of your tub. In that case, you could ask the company who made it to recommend some safe cleansers.

How Much Weight Can an Acrylic Bathtub Hold?

Bathtubs made of acrylic often weigh somewhere between 80 and 100 pounds on their own. When a person and water are combined, the maximum weight supported by a tub of this type is typically in the range of 333 to 667 pounds.

Do All Acrylic Tubs Need a Mortar Bed?

Because it is not self-supporting, an acrylic tub needs to have mortar or grout applied around its bottom to stabilize it. The floor should be sturdy enough to handle the weight of the bathtub, the water, and the individual using it.

Which Is Better, an Acrylic Tub or a Fiberglass Tub?

Acrylic and fiberglass bathtubs have a few characteristics in common, but they have even more that set them apart from one another, particularly with regard to how well they hold up over time. In terms of similarities, their weights are comparable.

However, an acrylic tub can be slightly heavier than the others.

Both options are low-cost alternatives for bathrooms not situated on the first level because, in most cases, they will not require additional reinforcing beneath the bathtub. They both have a similar texture and appearance reminiscent of plastic.

With an average cost range of $200 to $500, fiberglass is one of the more affordable options for bathtub construction.

It is also sufficiently flimsy that it flexes somewhat when used, which may give the impression that it is unstable and awkward to use. Acrylic may be slightly flexible but not like a fiberglass tub.

Fragile fiberglass can break when subjected to sufficient force from an impact. The tub may even deform as its protective covering deteriorates over time, revealing the porous fiberglass material beneath the surface.

Acrylic is more robust than other materials and is not as susceptible to damage from impact or weight.

Acrylic can be obtained in various colors, unlike fiberglass, which is typically only available in white. Because it is very affordable to manufacture, acrylic can be molded into a much wider variety of shapes, styles, and sizes than other types of bathtubs, such as fiberglass.

What Company Makes the Best Acrylic Bathtubs?

American Standard is currently considered one of the best brands of acrylic tubs in the US. They offer highly competitive prices and have years of a strong reputation that recommends this brand.
