Best Touchless Kitchen Faucets of 2020

Categories Faucets
It’s time to upgrade your kitchen faucet to touchless.

Does a grubby kitchen faucet make you recoil? Perhaps, like many of us, you wish you had a third hand for opening and closing the faucet during food preparation.

Kitchens are busy places and, at any one time, there can be several activities going on. From food preparation to washing hands to filling up a glass, the sink is often at the center of it.

In the process, hands that have come into contact with germs or dirt will leave some of that on the sink’s faucet.

Is there any way to prevent this? Well, you can scold everyone and place ‘keep the faucet clean’ placards around the kitchen. Or, you can install one of the best touchless kitchen faucets and forget the drama.

In this article, we’ll be giving you the low down on these hassle-free faucets, and look at the best of them.

How Do They Work?

A touchless faucet is fitted with a proximity sensor that turns on water or shuts it off when you pass your hand across it. Depending on the model, the motion sensor is usually located on the spout or at the bottom of the faucet.

Most faucets feature pull-out sprayer heads to increase cleaning and water usage options. Some sprayer heads activate flow the moment they’re pulled down and stop when the hose retracts to its original position.

This type of hose or sprayer head recoil system requires space under your sink to fit the workings, so take this into consideration before you buy.

Be Water Wise

Did you know that a single dripping faucet can lose up to a liter a day or about 104 gallons a year? (1)

Not only is this a waste of a precious resource, but it also hikes up your water bill.

Touchless faucets auto shut after roughly three minutes if you don’t physically motion them to stop. Their shutting mechanism is designed to ensure that no water drips once it’s closed.

AC Power or Battery-Powered Faucets

Touchless faucets run on AC power, battery power, or both. However, the tap handle can manually override the sensor and you can use the faucet in the traditional way if you like.

Using batteries may seem the cheaper option but they do tend to run out at the most inconvenient time. It’s worth noting that some models have indicators that show when the batteries are running low.

Many newer models feature rechargeable batteries which is extremely convenient, the power bill notwithstanding.

Electrically powered faucets are more reliable as they’ll work for as long as they’re connected to a power source. Those that use both AC power and batteries ensure there’s always energy to run the faucet — useful if you’re prone to power outages.

Temperature Control

Touchless faucets come with built-in control systems to set the temperature you want. Some faucets even use color indicators to show the water temperature. Some models, however, are pre-set to warm and don’t allow any adjustment to be made.

Benefits of Using a Touchless Faucet

Touchless faucets add a sleek and modern look to any kitchen. Plus, there are a range of finishes to choose from to complement your kitchen’s decor.

Some of the main benefits of using them include:

1. Convenience

A rather obvious benefit is the ability to access water without having to touch the device. Your hands will be free to continue with their tasks without pausing. If your hands are full, the wave of an elbow works too.

2. It’s Sanitary

Think hygiene and high-traffic. Some foods we prepare in the kitchen, such as raw meats, can contain harmful bacteria (2).

When you turn on the tap to wash your hands after handling meat, germs are transferred to it. You and everyone else will touch the same tap when you finish washing your hands. In no time, those germs spread everywhere.

I don’t know about you, but a faucet smeared with cake batter, mud, sticky fruit or who-know-what just drives me nuts. By eliminating the need to touch the faucet, your kitchen will look (and be!) much cleaner.

3. Aesthetic Appeal

Gone are the days when people only used kitchens for meal preparation and cleaning dishes. Today’s kitchens are hang-out areas where friends or family gather. A sleek touchless faucet will add to the overall aesthetic appeal of your kitchen.

How to Choose the Best Kitchen Faucet

Before going out to buy a touchless faucet, here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1. Buy a Known Brand

We are by no means insinuating that unknown brands do a bad job. If you see a faucet you like from an unknown manufacturer, though, check the company out. You want peace of mind that a refund or replacement will be forthcoming in the event of a fault with the unit.

Well-known brands have a reputation to maintain and are more likely to produce high-quality merchandise. This, in turn, builds a higher level of confidence in their company.

2. Safety

Manufacturers are obliged to ensure that the products they bring to the market are safe for use. Several top brands comply with ADA (Americans with Disability Act). This assures that their products are accessible to people living with disabilities (3).

The CPSC does a great job of ensuring that the products you use are safe, but you should also be on the lookout.

A couple of years ago there was an incident where a consumer burned their thumb. In this case, there were several reports of the faucet’s battery box overheating and melting, producing smoke and even catching fire. The models were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (4).

You may come across models that are NSF Certified. The manufacturer has to undergo continuous inspection of their facilities and re-testing of its products to gain this certification. This guarantees that high standards are maintained (5).

3. Size

The faucet should add to your kitchen’s aesthetic appeal, not stick out conspicuously. Consider the size of your kitchen in relation to the size of the faucet, particularly its height.

Check how the tap handle turns and how much distance is available between the point of installation and the backsplash wall. You’ll need clearance for the taps to move their full range or the function of the faucet will be restricted.

4. Motion Sensors

Consider how many sensors there are and their position. A faucet with a sensor on the spout and another near the bottom is easier to use. You can wash your hands by waving your hand near the spout or fill up a pot using the lower motion sensor.

Sensor accuracy is also a key consideration. You don’t want a faucet that activates water flow simply because you walked past the sink. A unit that does this will consume unnecessary energy and waste water.

But a sensor that only works if you’re a couple of inches away from it may become frustrating, too. Ultimately, choose the faucet that feels most comfortable for your specific needs.

5. Pull-Down vs. Fixed Type

The length of the hose and spout varies between models, so you’ll need to find one that’s a comfortable length for you.

Faucets with pull-down spouts are naturally more attractive but usually need a more complicated installation with space required under the sink for the recoil system.

The fixed spout faucet will work better for shallow sinks. Plus, they’re much cheaper.

6. Accessories Included

Check what accessories are included in the package. If you have a two-hole or a three-hole sink, it’s a good idea to cover any unneeded ones with an Escutcheon (deck plate). This is used to seal the faucet to the sinkhole.

Being an optional accessory, you may find that some manufacturers don’t include the deck plate in the package. If you need one on your sink, you’ll have to purchase it separately.

Some companies will provide everything you need to install your faucet, including a tightening tool. Pretty cool right?

7. Battery Life

What you need to look at is the lifespan of the power source. Battery powered touchless faucets use four or six AA batteries, but while some batteries last up to two years, some run out after six months. How often are you willing to replace batteries?

8. Quality of Materials

Faucets are exposed to water, knocks, and continuous use. The last thing you want to see are signs of rust or chipping. Go for high-quality materials like stainless steel or brushed nickel.

Faucets with spot and fingerprint resist features are a preferable option that’s easy to maintain. Faucets that retain water spots can become an eyesore and will require cleaning and wiping down more often.

9. Arc Height/Arc

Many of us appreciate higher arcs to ease movement of large utensils in and out of the sink. But one thing we can overlook is the depth of our sinks. A faucet with a higher or a more outward curve tends to spill water outside the sink.

Take measurements before buying, or you may find yourself endlessly wiping water off your countertop or floor.

10. Cost

The price is important but it shouldn’t be the only determining factor. There’s a reason why this point is on our list. A faucet’s price doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with its quality.

Here are some questions you should ask:

  • What are the similarities between the high-end and the more reasonably priced faucet?
  • What are the differences and are they deal breakers?
  • Is the cost proportionate to the quality and features?

Answer these and you’ll be on your way to making a good financial investment.

11. Warranty

Product warranties can be found on the manufacturer’s website or you can ask the customer care team to send you one. Read between the lines and understand the terms of replacements and how long the warranty will last.

Some companies offer a lifetime warranty to a homeowner but will limit the period for a business establishment.
