User Experience

I've used this interactive feeder to keep my pets entertained and it's turned out to be a hit, especially with my chubbier feline! The feeder gets them more engaged with their treats, prevents them from gulping it all down too fast, and provides some much-needed activity throughout the day. Initially, there were some issues with the mat that's supposed to hold the feeder in place as it was bent out of shape, but after a few days and a bit of patience, it corrected itself and now firmly holds the feeder in place. My cats now have a fun and challenging way to earn their treats. Even my more reserved cat, Alyssa, who's had a tough past, has taken a liking to this and it's become our special bonding activity.

When I first used this shower pan during my master bathroom remodel, I was pleasantly surprised by its sturdy, yet lightweight quality. Being able to carry it singlehandedly to the room was a bonus and its reliability put my mind at ease, eliminating any worries about potential leaks. Its design also offers flexibility, as it can be used immediately upon installation, even before tiling, though it feels more robust once tiles are added.

Community Feedback

Great, this shower base exceeded my expectations completely. Despite a few cosmetic blemishes, it holds its color and cleans up brilliantly, proving it to be a sturdy solution for any DIY enthusiast. Installing it required some research and a bit of patience, especially when it comes to ensuring a level and solid backfill using an 80-pound bag of mortar. One piece of advice - don't try to adjust the base once laid, you'll save yourself a ton of aggravation. Although I can't comment on wall set or door size compatibility - I built my own walls and used a curtain - I can say that this base, with its solid supports and heavy-duty feel, performs excellently and adds a touch of class to my bathroom.

DreamLine Single Threshold Shower Base

Most Popular Shower Pan

This DreamLine base has a single threshold at the front and is designed to fit a three-wall alcove shower. It features a right, left, or central opening to install a 2-inch drain.

The base is made with non-porous, high-gloss acrylic material for improved durability and easier maintenance. It is also reinforced with fiberglass and has a SlipGrip layer to prevent falls.

The low 2 ¾-inch threshold provides easy entry and exit for people with limited mobility and creates a discrete, stylish look. Some customer reviews mention being able to install it easily without professional help.

A drain plate isn’t included and needs to be purchased separately.

First-Hand Impression

Best shower pan I've ever had the pleasure of installing and using over the years. Its high-gloss, brilliant white finish is not only visually appealing but also surprisingly durable, maintaining its shine and resistance to scratches even after five years of regular use, granted it's given gentle and frequent care to avoid the need for harsh cleaning chemicals. However, despite its overall quality and solid feel, especially when set in mortar, it's worth noting that the pan can be prone to scratching and that the drain isn't centered, which could be a minor design flaw for some.

Woodbridge Tileable Shower Base

Most Luxurious Shower Base

This bold Woodbridge shower base comes as a single piece that is ready to install. It is designed to have tiles placed over the bottom of the pan to create your own luxurious style.

This kit contains everything necessary to install the tiles yourself. It includes three aluminum bars and 12 pounds of tile epoxy adhesive. This should be enough to tile the entire floor of the pan.

Although different sizes are available, the square drain is always at the center of the base. Your purchase includes a 2-inch PVC drain and a stainless steel drain plate with a nickel finish.

This shower pan is tough against impacts and is scratch-resistant. It is also UPC and CSA-certified as a mark of its high-quality standards.

Pros

  • UPC and CSA-certified
  • Ready to install
  • High-quality drain plate
  • 3-year limited warranty

User Experience

I found this shower base to be quite sturdy and fitting perfectly in my 60"x 34" frame, but the packaging for the accompanying adhesive was a letdown. The bag had ruptured, causing a mess, and the instructions were unclear regarding the application, leaving me uncertain and needing advice I couldn't get due to the lack of contact information for the manufacturer. Also, the finish on the pan was too smooth for my liking, raising concerns about adhesion; this product might benefit from a slightly textured surface.

Proflo Square Shower Pan with Strainer

Most Economical Shower Pan

If you want a simple and effective shower pan without breaking the bank, this budget-friendly square base from Proflo is a great option.

The pan is a single molded piece to ensure it is watertight and for easier installation. Most customers were able to install the base alone without the help of a professional.

Despite being an economical option, this base is made of high-quality composite material with additional reinforcement. Its non-porous surface is able to resist stains, shocks, and heat, all of which are very important as you shower.

It has a non-slip top layer to prevent falls when getting in and out of the shower. Many reviewers said this product exceeded their expectations. If any issues occur, the manufacturer covers this product with a 12-month limited warranty.

Pros

  • Made of composite material
  • Easy installation
  • Budget-friendly
  • Anti-slip surface

Cons

  • Short warranty
  • Only available in white

Personal Perspective

When I received this shower pan, I was disappointed to find it damaged with a broken leg and cracks in two corners. Despite this, my installer assured me it would not affect usability and would be hidden behind the drywall, so we went ahead with it. Surprisingly, it fit perfectly and had an impressive sturdiness, even in a camper setup. The drain mold design was a bit unconventional, requiring some adjustments to existing pipes, but overall, the acrylic itself was robust. Unfortunately, the size wasn't as accurate as described, causing us to remove tiles for installation, but otherwise, the shower pan performed well.

Kohler 9054-0 Salient Shower Receptor

Most Multi-Functional Shower Pan

If you want a versatile shower tray, the rectangular Kohler Salient base is an excellent option. Its shape provides plenty of space to maneuver under your shower.

Made of sturdy materials with an ultra-thick enamel coating, it can hold a lot of weight. Its low 3 ¼-inch threshold provides easier entry and exit.

This unique base is made of a durable enameled cast iron that contains 80% recycled materials. It is designed to be installed in an alcove surrounded by three walls. Kohler provides a lifetime limited warranty.

You can also install a shower bench seat if you are unable to stand while showering or simply want to relax.

This shower pan is a substantial, high-quality product that is noticeably heavy. When it arrived, there was some caked dirt on it and a small chip in one corner, along with a few dots of visible rust. Despite these flaws, the cast iron material is a major plus, especially as it allows for magnets to maintain the shower curtain in place. I paired this pan with onyx collection walls during a bathroom remodel and the outcome was stunning. Be prepared for the weight of this product, it's built to last, but you may need help moving it.

Shower Pan or Tiles?

If your bathroom floor is already tiled, you might be tempted to simply add a drain and install the shower above the tiles. This might be cheaper in the short term but it isn’t the most durable option.

Tiles will age and crack over time, allowing water through and potentially creating mold and mildew. The surrounding grout can be a weakness. Even the best waterproof grouts will eventually wear off and fail. You will then need to fix or replace the grout, a process that can be both costly and time-consuming.

Adding a pan over your tiles will make your shower area far more durable. They are sturdier and can resist shock and varying degrees of heat. Maintenance is minimal, and installation and replacement are also much simpler than applying tiles.

Shapes of Shower Pans

Pans are available in various shapes to accommodate every type of shower and bathroom design, as well as every installation location in your bathroom.

Main Designs

There are five main base shapes, each designed to fulfill a specific purpose:

  • Quadrant base: This V-shaped pan is tucked in a corner and features round, enclosed doors. They are a great option when space is limited.
  • Neo-angle base: These pans have a prism shape. They are suitable for mid-sized bathrooms and are also installed in a corner. The unique footprint provides more space than quadrant trays.
  • D-shaped base: If a corner shower isn’t an option but you still want a compact tray, these pans are an excellent alternative. They have a round enclosure and can be installed against any flat wall.
  • Square base: One of the most common types, square pans are easy to install and are suitable for both corners and flat walls.
  • Rectangular base: For large bathrooms, spacious rectangular pans provide far more room to move around in. Some can even be tiled over to achieve a more luxurious look.

Number of Thresholds

The threshold number of a base describes how many sides won’t be adjacent to a wall. For example, a single-threshold base will be installed in an alcove and surrounded by three walls. A three-threshold pan, in contrast, is designed to only have one side attached to a wall panel.

Threshold Heights

Bases have edges of various heights — also known as thresholds. Deep pans can contain more water and prevent overflowing. On the other hand, pans with a low front threshold allow easier access.

When shopping for a base, you will see the following threshold types:

  • Beveled: Beveled shower pans have a slight slope to accommodate wheelchairs. These products are usually ADA-compliant (2).
  • Barrier-free: These pans allow you to enter the shower without any risk of tripping over the edge, as you don’t need to step up.
  • Curbed: The front edge of curbed pans usually measures between a ½-inch to 6 inches high.
  • Temporary: This versatile threshold can be removed to accommodate all members of a household.

Shower Pan Materials

The material used to make a shower pan will have a significant impact on its quality, durability, and price.

Acrylic Bases

Much like bathtubs, acrylic is currently the most popular shower pan material. It is lightweight, making it easy to transport and install.

Acrylic pans are also very durable and often reinforced with other high-quality materials, such as fiberglass (3). They are also one of the most budget-friendly options, making them ideal if you don’t want to spend a large amount of money on your shower enclosure.

Fiberglass Bases

Fiberglass bases are usually cheaper than acrylic. They are made of a combination of polyester resin and woven glass fiber. Although they are even lighter than acrylic, they are also less durable; the topcoat can wear off over time, allowing water to seep into the tray itself.

Composite Bases

Composite pans are extremely durable, as well as among the lightest types. A high-quality composite base should comfortably last you more than a decade. However, they they are also among the most expensive pans, which might put them beyond your budget.

Porcelain Bases

Porcelain is another sturdy shower base material. It can comfortably hold heavy weights and will remain in pristine condition for many years with proper care.

The main drawbacks are that they are more expensive than other types and heavier, making them more difficult to install. This means they might not be the best option for an inexperienced DIYer.

Tiled Bases

These bases are designed to have tiles mounted in the pan. This creates a unique and luxurious look but they also have a few drawbacks.

Tiles are usually less durable than other materials. The grout holding them in place will need to be regularly cleaned and eventually replaced. Tiled bases also have additional labor costs and you will need to pay extra for the tiles.

Other Features to Look For

In addition to the shape, threshold, and material of a shower pan, you should also consider these points when shopping:

Stain resistance

Shower trays are frequently exposed to dirty and soapy water, which can soon leave them stained. It is important to choose a stain-resistant tray, particularly if it is lightly colored.

Scratch resistance

Shower pans need to be tough to prevent scratches. From dropping shampoo bottles to using abrasive cleaning tools, choosing a scratch-free material will ensure your pan stays pristine.

Cleaning agent

Some materials — such as acrylic — can be damaged by harsh chemical cleaners. Using natural solutions, such as white vinegar and water, will help protect your shower tray.

Drain location

Ensure that the hole at the bottom of the pan will fit above your drain pipe. Typically, drains are positioned at the center, rear corner, or sides of a base.

Colors

A matching base will complement the rest of your shower enclosure and bathroom. Shower pans are typically available in shades of black, white, gray, or beige.

Attached seat

Typically found on rectangular bases, a shower bench can be life-changing for people with limited mobility or anyone else who needs to sit down while showering.

Quality certifications

Choosing a product that is certified by a recognized organization means you can be confident in the quality of your shower pan — look for CSA, UPC, UL, or ANSI certifications.

FAQs

What Is the Life Expectancy of a Shower Pan?

A shower pan’s life expectancy varies between 10 and 45 years. Because it is often firmly fastened to the floor using bolts, sealant, and concrete, a shower pan should never experience any movement if the installation process is carried out appropriately.

But the passage of time can cause these tools to begin to deteriorate and result in movement. The materials used for securing anything can become dislodged if there are significant vibrations in the environment.

If you observe any strange slope in the shower pan, this could be a warning sign that the shower pan has deflected.

When deflection occurs, the floor beneath the pan might have water damage and is beginning to give out. Have this checked immediately, as it could pose an injury risk or could lead to structural house damage.

How Do You Clean a Shower Pan?

There are a few different ways to clean a shower pan, and the method you use will largely depend on the type of pan you have. If you have a metal shower pan, you want to use a mild soap and water solution to clean it.

You can also use vinegar and water solution to help remove any tough stains. If you have a plastic shower pan, then you can use a bleach and water solution to clean it. Just be sure to rinse the pan really good after cleaning it with bleach.

What Do You Put Under a Shower Pan?

Experts recommend using mortar under a shower pan. Even though a shower base is a rather straightforward component, it must be placed correctly for it to be of any use. A slope is already incorporated into the shower base because its primary purpose is to facilitate water drainage.

Which Is Better: Fiberglass or Acrylic Shower Pan?

A fiberglass shower pan is typically made of a plastic resin that gives it durability, strength, and resistance to chemicals. An acrylic pan is made of acrylic glass and resembles a fiberglass pan.

Each type has a few distinct advantages depending on the situation. Before deciding which is better for your renovation project, you need to consider whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Fiberglass shower pans are preferable when a high degree of moisture retention is called for. On the other hand, acrylic shower pans are ideal for those living in areas with high water pressure or looking for a material that requires little maintenance.

What Is the Difference Between a Shower Pan and a Shower Base?

A shower pan and a base provide the same function: direct water from the shower down the shower drain. Despite this, there are some subtle variances in the function that exist between the two.

A shower pan is a waterproof base upon which a shower curtain or enclosure will rest. The pan is just one of three components in a full bathroom remodel, including the walls, floor, and ceiling.

One of the main functions of a shower pan is to keep water from seeping through the subflooring into the home’s structure below.

A shower base provides additional functionality by providing the space in which plumbing pipes can be installed and providing stability for the feet of shower doors.

Which Type of Shower Pan Is the Best?

The DreamLine SlimLine DLT-1136600 is currently the best shower pan choice. This shower base features a center drain location and is designed for direct-to-studs installation. The SlimLine DLT-1136600 Shower Base is made of durable acrylic material.

It is available in multiple sizes to fit your needs. With its clean lines and low-profile design, the DreamLine SlimLine DLT-1136600 Shower Base will give your bathroom a chic, contemporary look.
