Shower Pan or Tiles?
If your bathroom floor is already tiled, you might be tempted to simply add a drain and install the shower above the tiles. This might be cheaper in the short term but it isn’t the most durable option.
Tiles will age and crack over time, allowing water through and potentially creating mold and mildew. The surrounding grout can be a weakness. Even the best waterproof grouts will eventually wear off and fail. You will then need to fix or replace the grout, a process that can be both costly and time-consuming.
Adding a pan over your tiles will make your shower area far more durable. They are sturdier and can resist shock and varying degrees of heat. Maintenance is minimal, and installation and replacement are also much simpler than applying tiles.
Shapes of Shower Pans
Pans are available in various shapes to accommodate every type of shower and bathroom design, as well as every installation location in your bathroom.
Main Designs
There are five main base shapes, each designed to fulfill a specific purpose:
- Quadrant base: This V-shaped pan is tucked in a corner and features round, enclosed doors. They are a great option when space is limited.
- Neo-angle base: These pans have a prism shape. They are suitable for mid-sized bathrooms and are also installed in a corner. The unique footprint provides more space than quadrant trays.
- D-shaped base: If a corner shower isn’t an option but you still want a compact tray, these pans are an excellent alternative. They have a round enclosure and can be installed against any flat wall.
- Square base: One of the most common types, square pans are easy to install and are suitable for both corners and flat walls.
- Rectangular base: For large bathrooms, spacious rectangular pans provide far more room to move around in. Some can even be tiled over to achieve a more luxurious look.
Number of Thresholds
The threshold number of a base describes how many sides won’t be adjacent to a wall. For example, a single-threshold base will be installed in an alcove and surrounded by three walls. A three-threshold pan, in contrast, is designed to only have one side attached to a wall panel.
Threshold Heights
Bases have edges of various heights — also known as thresholds. Deep pans can contain more water and prevent overflowing. On the other hand, pans with a low front threshold allow easier access.
When shopping for a base, you will see the following threshold types:
- Beveled: Beveled shower pans have a slight slope to accommodate wheelchairs. These products are usually ADA-compliant (2).
- Barrier-free: These pans allow you to enter the shower without any risk of tripping over the edge, as you don’t need to step up.
- Curbed: The front edge of curbed pans usually measures between a ½-inch to 6 inches high.
- Temporary: This versatile threshold can be removed to accommodate all members of a household.
Shower Pan Materials
The material used to make a shower pan will have a significant impact on its quality, durability, and price.
Acrylic Bases
Much like bathtubs, acrylic is currently the most popular shower pan material. It is lightweight, making it easy to transport and install.
Acrylic pans are also very durable and often reinforced with other high-quality materials, such as fiberglass (3). They are also one of the most budget-friendly options, making them ideal if you don’t want to spend a large amount of money on your shower enclosure.
Fiberglass Bases
Fiberglass bases are usually cheaper than acrylic. They are made of a combination of polyester resin and woven glass fiber. Although they are even lighter than acrylic, they are also less durable; the topcoat can wear off over time, allowing water to seep into the tray itself.
Composite Bases
Composite pans are extremely durable, as well as among the lightest types. A high-quality composite base should comfortably last you more than a decade. However, they they are also among the most expensive pans, which might put them beyond your budget.
Porcelain Bases
Porcelain is another sturdy shower base material. It can comfortably hold heavy weights and will remain in pristine condition for many years with proper care.
The main drawbacks are that they are more expensive than other types and heavier, making them more difficult to install. This means they might not be the best option for an inexperienced DIYer.
Tiled Bases
These bases are designed to have tiles mounted in the pan. This creates a unique and luxurious look but they also have a few drawbacks.
Tiles are usually less durable than other materials. The grout holding them in place will need to be regularly cleaned and eventually replaced. Tiled bases also have additional labor costs and you will need to pay extra for the tiles.
Other Features to Look For
In addition to the shape, threshold, and material of a shower pan, you should also consider these points when shopping:
