    Shower Head GPM and Pressure

    What is GPM?

While shopping for a shower head, you’ll find “GPM” specifications on every model. GPM represents how many gallons per minute are being dispensed by the shower head.

The higher the GPM, the stronger the water pressure is. Keep in mind, however, that since 1994, the U.S. government has imposed a maximum pressure of 2.5 GPM for all shower heads (2). This is to save water while showering.

    Water Pressure

The strength of your water flow mainly relies on your city’s water pressure, which we can’t control.

If you need a stronger pressure than the regulated 2.5 GPM, there are a few tricks you can employ:

    • Flow restrictor: First, remove the water flow restrictor located inside the shower head.
    • Pressurized shower head: Another method is to purchase a model with a pressurized head allowing to boost the water flow. Some products come with various modes enabling different types of pressures.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to lower the water pressure of your shower, select a model with a GPM between 1.5 and 2.

How to Choose the Best Shower Head?

Besides the type of shower head, there are other characteristics worth considering:

    Fixed Versus Handheld

Fixed shower heads are directly attached to the short arm extension affixed to the wall. They don’t come with a hose and, therefore, require less maintenance. Although the head itself can have slightly adjustable angles, you won’t be able to grab the head for more precise use.

On the other hand, handheld types are connected to a flexible hose. You can even take it off the bracket to use it freely.

If you enjoy both versions, some products come with both options: a fixed shower head with an additional handheld one. Just pick the one that meets your needs of the day.

    Shower Nozzles

Shower nozzles are what tires are to a car. They’re the small holes found inside the shower head where water comes out.

    Nozzle Sizes

Tiny nozzles typically mean that the water flow has less pressure, which is ideal for rainfall showers. Larger ones, however, can let more water flow through, resulting in a stronger jet.

    How Many Nozzles?

Every model comes with a different number of nozzles. The larger the head, the more they contain. With more nozzles, you’ll also have better body coverage.

    Nozzle Quality

Not every nozzle is made equal. Some are built with silicone, while others are made of rubber or plastic. Metallic nozzles aren’t recommended as they tend to accumulate hard water and limescale faster.

Whichever material you choose, it should be heat-resistant — especially if you enjoy very hot showers.

    Finish and Style

Have you spent a lot of time and energy designing a stylish bathroom? Then you’ll want to ensure that the shower head matches it. The good news is that finishes are available to fit all tastes: chrome, nickel, bronze, or plain white.

They also come in all shapes. Some models are thin and sleek, perfectly matching modern bathrooms. Other products, though, are more compact to fit smaller showers.

    Shower Head Uses

Most of us know what type of showers and water pressure we like and long for. It is, however, important to consider who else might be showering.

If you aren’t purchasing it for yourself, think of any limitations or desire this person may have. For example, are you buying on behalf of an elderly person? Also, if you have teenagers at home, bear in mind that a model including a speaker may considerably increase showering times.

Finally, take into account various heights and select one matching all requirements.

    Easy Installation

If you aren’t planning on hiring a plumber or looking to use the shower head right out of the box, it’s best to select one simple to set up. Wall-mounted models are generally easier to install than products needing a ceiling mount.

    Water and Energy Consumption

In the U.S., 1.2 trillion gallons of water are used annually to shower (3). While limiting our time spent showering can play a significant role, so can the model we pick.

Products displaying the WaterSense EPA certification guarantee a reduction of water use by at least 20 percent. This will also keep your energy bill on the low side (4).

Which Brand of Shower Head is the Best?

The shower head market is pretty competitive, with some well-established companies dominating.

The company, led by Mr. Al Moen, started manufacturing faucets in the thirties. It soon expanded to other kitchen and bathroom products. Today, Moen is one of the leading shower head brands in North America, offering over 75 years of experience.

Their products are designed for both residential and commercial uses.

Delta is known for inventing new ways of using water. Using proprietary technologies — such as H2Okinetics — it makes bathroom and kitchen hardware more convenient.

Delta isn’t only an Edison award winner. It was also the EPA’s partner of the year for several years (5).

AquaHomeGroup specializes in making filtered shower heads. These filters can remove impurities such as chlorine, other contaminants, as well as foul odors. Some of their products can even disperse vitamin C through the water. The filters can also be added on their own to any existing shower heads.

SparkPod makes both filtered and rain shower types. This company, however, doesn’t only make shower heads. It offers products increasing home comfort and convenience — including coffee devices.

On another note, SparkPod is involved in giving back to the community. It contributes to female entrepreneurship by offering small credits. The company also provides seeds and equipment to farmers from developing countries.

    High Sierra

High Sierra was launched by David Malcolm in California. The first products were designed for the golf and agricultural industry with irrigation purposes in mind. Malcolm developed a nozzle technology using low pressure — 1.5 GPM — thus saving energy and water use.

Today, High Sierra makes energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly shower heads.

Triton is based out of the U.K. but can deliver anywhere in the U.S. It has manufactured shower heads — including electric models — since 1975, so is well-established in the market. It even won two British awards in 2017, in both the “Best of British” and “Best Bathroom Supplier” categories.

The manufacturer is dedicated to making affordable products. Yet, it still offers high functionality, quality, and long-lasting shower heads.

The Best Shower Heads of 2020

While selecting the 10 best shower heads, we considered all populations and needs. We looked closely at each model’s specifications, style, features, and quality. Finally, we assessed all users’ comments to make our final list.

    1. AquaHomeGroup Luxury Filtered Shower Head

Although this shower head comes with only one water pressure and mode, it includes a feature cherished by many — a filter. This model has been designed to keep you, your family and your pets, healthy.

It comes with 15 separate filter stages to remove various types of impurities — such as chlorine or heavy metals. It’ll even get rid of smells.

On top of that, an additional cartridge is placed to leak vitamins C and E into the water. Reviewers particularly enjoy the positive impact on hair and skin.

Unlike other models, this product comes packaged in a luxurious black gift box. Inside, you’ll also find Teflon tape, O-rings, and five shower caps if you don’t feel like getting your hair wet.

Many factors will dictate how often to change the filters, such as water quality or frequency of use. Yet, the manufacturer assures that you shouldn’t have to worry about changing filters before six months of use.

    • Highly efficient filter.
    • Vitamin C and E cartridge.
    • Comes in a gift box.
    • Filters need to be replaced regularly.

Owning a small shower doesn’t mean you should have one that’s weak or inconvenient. This model is highly efficient while being compact, fitting all bathroom sizes.

Although the head’s dimension is smaller than other models, it’s made to provide three times more coverage.

Not only won’t you have to fight for the water, but it also offers more pressure and heat. All this, while using 20 percent less water, as guaranteed by the WaterSense EPA certification.

This product comes with only four, but large and efficient, nozzles. They’re easy to clean and are designed to prevent mineral buildup. A side knob allows you to switch between three modes: strong, drenching, or gentle water flow.

Because style is also important, it’s covered with a classic chrome finish, giving it a luxurious and clean look.

    • Compact size.
    • Extra-large coverage.
    • WaterSense certification.
    • Self-cleaning nozzles.
    • The high water flow and coverage tend to heavily spray water outside of the shower.

    3. High Sierra's All-Metal Low Flow Showerhead

This shower head aims to provide a low water flow — 1.5 GPM. If this is a little too low for your liking, you can opt for 1.8 and 2.0 GPM models. In all cases, the manufacturer recommends using a 1.8 GPM model when the arm is higher than 7 feet from the floor.

This product should help you save at least 40 percent of water and energy. It’s even WaterSense certified, meeting the EPA’s standards in terms of performance and efficiency (6).

While it provides low water flow, you’ll still get to enjoy a relaxing spray containing large droplets. You’ll also be able to move the head’s angle as desired by adjusting the swivel.

The entire product is made of various metals components. On one side, the body is built with metal. On the other, it comes with a chrome, nickel, bronze, or brass finish to fit all tastes and bathroom styles.

    4. AquaBliss TheraSpa Hand Shower

This shower head is designed for anyone looking for consistent high-pressure water flow.

A water restrictor is located inside the head, limiting the amount of outgoing water to 2.5 GPM. It’s typically a tiny rounded filter with rubber edges. To ensure you get the highest pressure, the manufacturer made the process of removing the restrictor simple.

Limestone accumulating around the nozzles can also decrease water pressure. The 90 high-quality nozzles are made of silicone with anti-clogging and self-cleaning properties. Not only will this allow for a strong jet, but it also makes it easier to maintain.

This model is also a rainfall shower head type, and the wide head should cover most of your body. When needed, move the swivel ball as desired to adjust the water flow angle.

    • Easy-to-remove water restrictor.
    • Self-cleaning nozzles.
    • Large body coverage.
    • Easy to install.
    • Some users experienced leaks around the swivel ball.

Showering times are essential, whether in the comfort of your home or on the road. To enjoy your showers on the go, this model is suitable for tiny RV showers.

Users find the water jet wide enough to cover the whole body. It comes with a wall bracket, allowing the wand to move into any direction desired. Some reviewers were even able to use their old support.

This model provides firm pressure without limiting heating time. Finishing a shower with cold water never makes for a pleasant experience.

Besides, this product comes with three modes. Choose between a full or massage spray, or press the convenient pause button to save water while shampooing. If you decide to rinse clothes or sandy feet, the 59-inch flexible hose should make the process smooth and simple.

    7. KES All-Metal Rain Shower Head

Showers providing a rainfall-like sensation can give relaxation a new meaning. Besides, this shower head might be one of the widest ones at 8 inches.

The water should drill down over your body without the need to twist and rotate. If needed, the head can even be tilted by adjusting the swivel ball to your desired angle.

If 2.5 GPM isn’t enough pressure, the water restrictor can be easily removed to increase power. Also, the rubber nozzles are designed to prevent limestone and hard water accumulation.

As for the body itself, it’s made of stainless steel. This selected material is both corrosion and heat-resistant, making a long-lasting and resistant product.

This model comes with an oil-rubbed bronze finish for a sleek and elegant design. If this color doesn’t fit your bathroom’s style, nickel and black finishes are available.

As we get older, simple actions — such as taking a shower — become more challenging. This model includes user-friendly features for individuals looking to stay balanced while showering.

This shower head can be used directly attached to the extension arm. In addition, the 5.5-inch spray coverage should limit most movements inside the shower.

Grabbing a shower head is generally straightforward. Putting back inside a small bracket, however, can be challenging for seniors. So we love this product’s unique feature of a magnetic docking system.

Instead of struggling between balance and finding the tiny bracket, this head snaps back in place. To take it back, an easy pull from the handle will be enough.

Becoming a senior doesn’t mean giving up on luxury and little extras. This model provides six different modes. They’re all easily accessible on the head and by the push of a button.

    • Magnetic docking system.
    • Large spray coverage.
    • Easy-to-push button.

You’ll still get to enjoy three different spray patterns — from a jet function, a massage mode, and a rainfall water flow. The control panel makes switching between each mode a breeze. It’s also conveniently placed on the side of the head, making it easily accessible.

We like the on/off button, located just under the head. With this, when showering a child or a pet, you’ll be able to control the water flow without leaning towards the tap. Just don’t forget to turn the shower off as you’re leaving it.

Finally, this model should save 35 percent of water while maintaining water pressure. This is a great way to make a positive impact both on your wallet and the environment.

    10. Triton Seville 7.5kW Electric Shower

This product’s concept is slightly different from other models. It only heats a small amount of water at a time.

This electric shower includes a control panel, a handheld shower head, a 49-inch anti-twist hose, and a rise rail. The white head, combined with a chrome rising bar, should fit most bathrooms styles.

The first knob allows you to choose between three heating modes: cold for rinsing, economy, and hot for chilly winter days. The lower one lets you adjust the heat more precisely.

The handheld part can be conveniently moved up and down along the wall-mounted bar. This means that the shower should fit all members of a family, from the tallest ones to the youngest addition.

If you’re worried about safety and having an electrical device in a wet environment, do not fear. This model comes with a sensor to limit the heat when it gets too hot, and to shut it off when it surpasses a certain threshold.

    • Three heating modes available.
    • Adjustable height.
    • Safety features.
    • Water takes more time to heat than expected.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How to Clean a Shower Head

Although shower heads are in constant contact with water, they still need regular cleaning. Water residue can build up, blocking the nozzles and water flow.

    1. Brush the nozzles: Remove superficial dirt with a toothbrush.
    2. Soak in white vinegar: For this step, you can decide to keep the head attached to the extension arm or to take it out. If you choose to keep it on, fill a small plastic bag with vinegar and wrap it around the head using tape. Leave it for a few hours.
    3. Run water: If you’ve removed the head, reattach it. Turn on the shower for a few minutes to drain the remaining vinegar.
    4. Clean the filter: You’ll find a small screen generally located between the head and the pipe. Use a toothbrush to remove any water buildup and put it back in place.

    Take Note

Do not use chemical cleaning agents as they could damage the shower head materials.

How to Replace a Shower Head

Although it can vary from one model to another, changing a shower head is generally easy and can be done within minutes. They’re often universal and can attach to most wall extensions.

    1. Plug the drain: Place a towel over the bathtub or shower drain. That way, if you were to drop any loose parts, you’d be able to retrieve them easily.
    2. Remove the existing hardware: Unscrew your old shower head and clean any tape residue around the connector.
    3. Teflon tape: Wrap it around the end of your extension pipe.
    4. Affix the new one: Set up the new head. This typically consists of twisting it around the extension arm.
    5. Test your new shower: Make sure it doesn’t leak around the connection. Your new shower head is now ready for use.

How to Unclog a Shower Head

Our previous method using vinegar should help unclog your shower head. For stubborn cases, vinegar can be brought to a boil for higher efficiency:

    1. Preparation: In a bowl, pour half vinegar and half water.
    2. Boil: Bring the mixture to boil and soak your shower head inside.
    3. Soak: Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes.
    4. Rinse: With mineral water and reassemble the parts.

    Find the Source

If the clog comes from the extension pipe rather than the shower head, remove it from the wall and use the same method.

How to Fix a Leaking Shower Head

Most leaks happen toward the connection between the head and the extension pipe. While causes can be numerous, leaks are often caused by a damaged O-ring or washer. Luckily, replacing one isn’t complicated:

    1. Disassemble: Take your shower head apart and remove the washer and/or O-ring.
    2. Get a new washer: Buy one at your hardware store. Bring the old one to ensure you’re purchasing the right size.
    3. Replace with the new one: After replacing the old parts, put the shower back together.
    4. Teflon tape: Wrap it up around the end pipe for a tighter connection.

    Clean Before Reassembly

As you’re disassembling the shower head, we recommend cleaning it using the vinegar method previously described.

How to Raise a Shower Head

Raising a shower head a few inches higher is a simple process that shouldn’t take longer than five minutes. In fact, you can keep your existing shower head:

    1. Remove the old extension arm: A wrench can be used to ease the procedure.
    2. Purchase a new one: Some extensions can raise the shower head by 10 to 12 inches. “S pipe” is a popular one, yet, many other models and shapes are also available.
    3. Attach and Test: After attaching the head to the extension, test your new fittings to be sure they work.

    Shower Heads for Every Need

Without the needed information, selecting the best shower head can quickly become the task you’ll leave on the back burner. Knowing what makes for the top models, however, should help you make a decision.

First, make a list of features and water pressures matching your needs. If you don’t live alone, don’t forget to account for others’ preferences, as some products are designed specifically for seniors or with adjustable heights. Equally important, have a close look at the nozzles’ quality and the product’s water consumption.
